The question most victims of bullying asks themselves is “why me?” and it is often difficult to determine the reason or reasons. Victims of bullying often have some of these qualities:

  • Tendency towards feeling guilty
  • Slow to anger
  • Difficulty in saying no
  • Tolerant
  • Tendency towards resolving conflict through dialogue
  • Strong forgiving streak
  • Generally gives others the benefit of the doubt
  • Low assertiveness
  • Low self-esteem
  • First to apologize (even when not guilty)
  • Easy to forgive
  • Sensitive in nature (feelings are easily hurt)
  • Easy to get along with
  • Works hard and is conscientious
  • Likeable
  • Display empathy (generally shows concern for others, tolerance and respect)
  • Selfless giving (puts the needs of others before themselves)
  • Lacks boundaries and limits (overlooks inappropriate behaviour from others)
  • Naive
  • Constant need to be valued
  • Requires higher level of reassurance
  • Denial of aggressive behaviour of others

Bullies are opportunistic and predatory and the victim is very often “in the wrong place at the wrong time”. Often the victim is in denial that they are being bullied and frequently blame themselves for the situation.
